AIC Ships the World's First SAS/SATA Storage Server Chassis With SFF8087-based Backplane
|
CITY OF INDUSTRY, CA, July 31st, 2006 - Advanced Industrial Computer, Inc. (AIC) announced today the shipping of SA1-0 series Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) storage server chassis. This entry-level non-expander based SAS server chassis series features the latest 36-ckt Mini-SAS connector (SFF-8087) on its SAS backplanes, to replace the bigger predecessors SFF-8484 and SFF-8470 InfiniBand connectors. SA1-0 series is a cost-effective solution for high performance SAS or SATA Multilane solutions. Many of the controller manufacturers are already shipping SAS and SATA controllers with SFF-8087 connectors to allow lower form factor or higher port count. By using the same connector on the backplane, cabling will be simplified and cost will be reduced. Although this is an entry-level design, an optional Storage Enclosure Processor (SEP) version will be available for enclosure management needs.
Most of AIC's existing SATA based chassis can be upgraded with this new backplane without mechanical modification, thus making migration to the new SAS technology simpler than ever. Enclosures with this new backplane will support both SAS and SATA drives in conjunctions with SAS and/or SATA HBA/RAID controllers. For expansion beyond each enclosure, customer can choose to use the SAS Expander based JBOD solutions marketed under the Xtore business unit. The flexibility and scalability offered by AIC's full SAS product line is unmatched by anyone in the industry.
"AIC has been a partner with 3ware and Molex for years to push the smaller form factor multilane connectors in place of the SFF-8470 InfiniBand connector. "A single backplane with this SFF-8087 connector will be able to support both SAS and SATA Multilane controllers. This design will leave customer flexibilities at a lower cost, not to mention the easier-manageable cables comparing to the InfiniBand cables."
